Ethos is a platform for thoughtful and engaging content on narrative medicine, medical ethics, law, and the humanities. We invite contributions that reflect a diversity of perspectives, driven by curiosity and a commitment to intellectual rigor.

Eligibility

We welcome submissions from our global audience with the belief that we are connected by our shared humanity.

  • Undergraduate and postgraduate students, as well as faculty members at any tertiary institution worldwide.

  • Healthcare providers and patients.

  • Other individuals interested in submitting articles to Ethos will be considered on a discretionary basis.

Submission Categories

At Ethos, we accept submissions in two primary categories: non-fiction and literature. We’re looking for work that engages deeply with the subjects of medical ethics, law, and the humanities. Below is a guide to what we are interested in publishing, though we remain open to innovative formats and ideas.

Non-fiction:

  • Op-eds: Sharp, well-argued opinion pieces that engage with current debates.

  • Commentaries: Insightful analyses of ongoing issues within our focus areas.

  • Essays: Thoughtful, reflective pieces that explore a topic in depth.

  • Personal or Clinical Experiences: First-person narratives that shed light on ethical dilemmas or human experiences in medical or legal contexts.

  • Research Articles: Academic work that contributes new knowledge to our fields of interest.

Literature:

  • Poems: Creative expressions that capture the complexities of human experience.

  • Prose: Short stories or reflective pieces that weave narrative with ethical themes.

Visual art: Any artworks, illustrations, and photographs are welcome for submission.

Submission Guidelines

Word Count: Submissions are recommended to be between 500 and 1,000 words. Submissions that fall outside the word count are, nevertheless, still welcome and will be considered. Poems can be of any length.

Format: Please submit your work as a Word document. Your document should include a clear title, as well as your name, degree, and year of graduation (e.g., CHAN Tai Man James, MBBS, 2028).

Citations: Use the Vancouver style for all references.

Illustrations: We encourage you to select an illustration to accompany your work. Ensure that the image is free from copyright restrictions (e.g. public domain, creative commons) or is properly licensed. Here are some resources where you can find suitable images:

The Review Process

All submissions are reviewed by a panel of student editors, and at times, along with faculty members from the Medical Ethics and Humanities Unit (MEHU) and The Centre for Medical Ethics and Law (CMEL) at HKU. We evaluate submissions based on several criteria, including relevance, accuracy, quality, diversity, and newsworthiness.

Our editing process is rigorous, collaborative, and supportive. If your submission is selected, we will work closely with you to refine your piece, ensuring it meets our standards while preserving the integrity of your voice and message.

Publication Platforms

Your final, polished work will be featured on our website, publicised on Instagram, LinkedIn, newsletters, and emails.

Submission Timeline

Submissions are accepted on a rolling basis throughout the year. However, to be considered for our next publication round, we encourage you to submit your work by October 31st, 2024. Submissions received after this date will still be reviewed, but may be considered for subsequent editions. This allows us to plan our upcoming issues while still welcoming your contributions at any time.

If you have an idea just coming into fruition for a submission, feel free to pitch it to us before submitting. We’re happy to discuss your concept and offer guidance to help shape your submission.
